Back to School Update 8-6-21

August 6, 2021

Dear APS Community,

As we prepare for the start of the school year we are planning to provide in-person instruction 5 days a week to  our students.  The first day of school is Monday, August 30, 2021 for a half-day session.  The length of the school day will be as follows for this school year:

Elementary:       8:35 – 3:38                    Half Day: 8:35 – 12:10

Middle School   7:35 – 2:24                    Half Day: 7:35 – 11:00

High School      7:45 – 2:36                    Half Day: 7:45 – 11:10

I am sharing the latest updates and recommendations regarding COVID-19 guidance from our health officials.  Throughout the pandemic, APS has adapted and adjusted with the requirements of state and local health departments and sought guidance from state and local health care leaders.  APS plans to do the same for the upcoming school year.

Based on the latest guidance for K-12 schools from the Centers for Disease Control, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and the Lenawee County Health Department, here are the guidelines for the start of the 2021-2022 school year:

  • Universal indoor masking for all students, staff, and visitors to K-12 schools is strongly recommended, regardless of vaccination status.

  • All unvaccinated students and staff who are eligible are strongly encouraged to get the COVID-19 vaccination. Vaccination is currently the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Contact the Lenawee County Health Department or your health care provider to schedule your vaccination.

  • Masks do not need to be worn outdoors for recess or outdoor learning activities for all individuals, regardless of vaccination status.

  • Athletics will continue to adhere to the rules set forth by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and guidance from the MDHHS and LCHD.

  • Layered mitigation strategies will continue, including handwashing, hand sanitizer, improved ventilation, and cleaning of classrooms and buildings.

  • The COVID-19 Daily Health Screener is no longer required for students and staff. Students and staff should stay home if they are experiencing one or more of the COVID-19 symptoms.

  • Families and staff will continue to be notified if they or their student has had close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual. Quarantine will only be required per the contact tracing from the LCHD.

  • All students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 regardless of vaccination status must quarantine.

This may be subject to change should the district receive new requirements or public health orders from the CDC, MDHHS, and/or LCHD. Please look for additional updates and communications as we get closer to the start of school. Those with extenuating circumstances requiring virtual courses should discuss their educational options with the building principal before August 17, 2021.

As a reminder, if you have not already completed the online enrollment form for your student(s), please do so at

Enjoy the rest of your summer and as always, GO MAPLES!!!
