APS Update 03-20-20

March 20, 2020

March 20, 20

Dear APS Community,

I wanted to take this moment to thank our Food Service, Transportation, and Custodial employees for the work that they have been doing during these difficult times.  As a result of their hard work, meals are being made, food is being delivered, and deep cleaning is taking place across the district’s facilities and buildings.

If you have not had an opportunity to go to Maple Pride, the district’s Facebook page, please do.  Thank you to the teachers that have been providing the links to educational opportunities, engaging activities, and virtual field trips for students and families to use as a resource during the school closure.

This morning the President announced that Federal requirements for student standardized assessments will be suspended for this school year.  This would apply to M-STEP, PSAT, and SAT assessments that are given in the spring for grades 3-11.

Yesterday the Governor and State Superintendent of Schools conducted a conference call with superintendents from across Michigan.  There was no indication from yesterday’s call on if, or when, an announcement will be made on when school will resume. The Michigan Department of Education has been working closely with the US Department of Education to seek waivers that will best support students and families.  One positive is the waiver request related to providing food to students during the shutdown. While there remain more questions still than answers, we in the education community are watching the updates from the Governor and the Michigan Department of Education to see how we can best support students and families during the school shut down.

Comcast has indicated that they will providehigh-speed internet for low-income families for 60 days.  Access to information is important during this time. For more information visit www.InternetEssentials.com or call 1-855-8-INTERNET.  Please share with any individuals that this might help. Also please pass along any other opportunities for free or low-cost internet families can access.

I anticipate more announcements related to education and schooling to take place next week from the Governor’s office and the Michigan Department of Education.  Adrian Public Schools will communicate those decisions and our implementation plans to our community as they are communicated. Thank you for your support and patience as we work through this difficult time.

GO MAPLES!!!
